During the 70s and 80s there was a mexican comedy show called "El Chavo del Ocho", which all the kids in my neighborhood loved. I never forgot one sketch where one character ("La Chilindrina") was trying to cheer up another one ("El Chavo") by telling the story of a poor bootblack child who made it out of poverty: He started shining shoes and saving money until he could buy his own equipment, and then became a small entrepreneur, buying more equipment and hiring more and more kids to do the job for him... At this point of the story, the eyes of El Chavo were full of hope, anticipating the end of the story: The kid probably became rich thanks to his hard work and business vision... But that was not the end of the story, because La Chilindrina immediately said: "He was buying more equipment and hiring more kids, until one day... he just won the lottery and became rich..."...
Since I started working on science, I can't avoid thinking that this joke is the best explanation of the scientific success: You try to find the best possible subject, the best possible working place, you work hard toward completion of your goals, you read a lot and try to understand, you test carefully, you go to places and meet people who can give you ideas or help you with your career, and, in the end, after all that stuff, if one day you win the lottery, then you will succeed... La Chilindrina was a genius...
